Fathom Analytics on Joomla: the plugin that was never built
Fathom gives you a single line of code. That is the whole setup.
No tag manager, no property to set up, no events to define. You paste the line and your dashboard fills up with data.
Which makes the Joomla situation almost absurd. Fathom has a WordPress plugin, a Squarespace guide, a Webflow guide and a Shopify app. Joomla gets a single paragraph that tells you to paste the script into your template by hand.
That paragraph is where the trouble starts.

Joomla templates are software and software gets updated.
The template that ships with Joomla updates every time Joomla updates. Commercial templates release their own updates several times a year. Either way, whatever you pasted into the template files gets overwritten and Joomla never warns you first.
So the script quietly disappears. You paste it in March, it works, you update Joomla in June and by that evening the script is gone. Nobody notices until July, when the Fathom graph looks flat and you spend an hour wondering whether your traffic really collapsed.
The other common suggestion is a custom HTML module. But that drops you into a second trap: Joomla strips <script> tags from anyone who is not a Super User. It still works the day you paste it. But it breaks the day someone else edits that module and, without thinking, saves it. No error, no warning.
The fix: a plugin built specifically for Joomla
StatJolt has a real Joomla plugin.
You paste the analytics code once, into one field in the admin. The plugin then writes that code into every finished page, right before the closing body tag, no matter how your template is built. It runs as a system plugin so it sits outside the template files. Joomla can update as often as it likes. Nothing you set up gets lost, because nothing gets overwritten.
It is also untouched by Joomla's text filter. It does not matter which user group edited last.
How to get started
Four steps and you do not need a code editor:
- Download the zip package.
- Add that zip file through Joomla's extension installer.
- Paste the analytics code into the field under Plugins.
- Open your site in a private window to see if it works. (If it does not, you may still need to clear the cache.)
The settings screen uses colour to show exactly where you stand. Refresh it if you get stuck! Green means data is coming in. Amber means the code is saved but nobody has loaded a page yet or the cache needs clearing. Red means something is wrong, for example you pasted the code incorrectly.
That is the end of the guessing.
It runs on Joomla 4, 5 and 6. The plugin interface is available in nine languages, including Hungarian, German, French and Spanish. So the editor on your team who does not speak English still understands the settings screen.
StatJolt or Fathom?
Both are cookie-free. Neither one needs a consent banner or a rewrite of your privacy policy.
Fathom starts at $15 a month (up to 100,000 pageviews) and climbs from there. There is a trial but no free plan. StatJolt costs 0 EUR until 11 April 2027 23:59:59 at any traffic level and stays 0 EUR after that for lower-traffic sites. In return we ask you to show a small logo on your site. Later, if you want, you can hide it. The smallest monthly plan is enough for that.
StatJolt writes nothing to your database beyond the single settings row that Joomla stores for every plugin anyway. That helps a lot if you take regular backups, because it does not keep growing their size.
Here is what else you get from StatJolt:
- We measure Core Web Vitals directly on your real site, we do not simulate them. So you also see when certain subpages load painfully slowly.
- Conversion funnels form automatically with no setup (if you have enough visitors for it). Or you can build them yourself.
- User journeys draw themselves.
- You can catch broken scripts before your customers complain that something is not working.
In short
Fathom's script really is one line but nothing in Joomla makes it safe to paste by hand. Your template gets overwritten and so does everything you put in it. You can try StatJolt instead.
The dashboard is one page and colours every change intelligently. So at a glance you can see whether something moved in a positive or a negative direction. You will get it.
